Two

Matthew 18:19 Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

Observation

Unity and harmony within the body of Christ seems to reflect the unity and harmony found within God. We are invited to fellowship with the divine nature — with the Holy Trinity. When two agree on earth — or when two or three gather together in prayer the fellowship of the Trinity is reflected in them. The power of God’s people being united in praying God’s will over situations and circumstances seems to tap into kingdom power. Jesus was revealing this secret to his disciples.

Application

This past week I had the privilege of preaching at rural church in Ohio. The pastor has had a powerful influence on the local community as he intentionally engages with those around him on a daily basis. He wears a pin with “2” on it — daily. This is very intentional as he hopes that it will encourage someone to ask, “Why are you wearing the number two?” At this point he proceeds headlong into a conversation on prayer. He brings them to this verse of scripture and asks them about their deepest need. He asks if he can partner with them in prayer about their need — and in this way, the two agree. He told me about the numerous people with whom he has prayed and the blessing in his own life to see so many answers to prayer. He then asked me for my need — and we are agreeing and praying.

Intentionality in prayer is important to the spiritual development of God’s people. This is not to be a solitary experience, but to be shared in community with the people of God. We are to reach out, to partner with others who are in need of prayer. When God’s people unite together there is synergy that may result in more than we could have imagined. But it takes intentionality, by spending time together as God’s people, seeking God’s face, and being led into the throne room where God’s will becomes my will.

Find a friend and become two who agree together. Then, let’s participate with God, as God changes the world.

Lord, thank you for the moments of encounter with you through your people.  Amen.

Scripture: Ex. 33:4 ¶ When the people heard these harsh words, they mourned, and no one put on ornaments. Does God Value Boys More than Girls?

Scripture: Lev. 12:1 ¶ The LORD spoke to Moses, saying: Lev. 12:2 Speak to the people of Israel, saying: ¶ If a woman conceives and bears a male child, she shall be ceremonially unclean seven days; as at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. Lev. 12:3 On the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. The Advantage of Sanctification

Scripture: Rom. 6:22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Observation: Two sides of life are presented here in great contrast.  One is a life of sin and enslavement to evil.  The other side of life is freedom which provides the advantage of sanctification (or holiness as some translate the word) that leads to eternal life.  The options here are a life of sin, slavery and death; or freedom, holiness and eternal life.  The advantage of holiness or sanctification is the benefit of the life of freedom.  Jesus died so that we might be made holy like him and this is something that is offered as a “fruit” or “advantage” right now.  The end is eternal life — but the living of life is that it can be lived out in holiness.  The next verse is really just an affirmation of the verse 22.  Sin will lead
