The Importance of Parental Influence

Cooking with my granddaughters over the holiday.

Scripture:

Luke 2:39   When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. 40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Observation:

These two little verses close the scene in the Temple. Mary and Joseph had been obedient to God, not from a legalistic perspective, but as participants in God’s work in the life of Jesus. Everything required by the law had been completed, and then some, including actions that would fulfill prophecy.

Luke skips some of the narrative found in Matthew’s gospel. He doesn’t include the wisemen, nor the trip to Egypt. He simply brings the birth story to a close with an emphasis upon the faithfulness of Jesus’ parents and the results that are seen in the life of the child. Earlier in the story, the dedication scene was reminiscent of Samuel, and now here in verse 40, and again in verse 52, we find echos of Jesus very similar to that of Samuel.

In both cases, Samuel and Jesus, we have parents who choose to intentionally participate in the wholehearted dedication of the child to God, and who actively influence the child to be faithful. Jesus is going to be raised in a home with parents who will guide him into following God’s purpose for his life.

Application:

Parental influence plays a major role in the life of a child. Yes, children can make their own decisions and go their own way in life, but it is the path on which they are placed early on, that can help to lead them. Jesus’ parents took their responsibility seriously, and helped to guide him as he grew.

Jesus grew and became physically strong. This is a comment on his physical health and condition. I live in the same house with three of my grandchildren and I am blessed to see how their parents work to help them become strong. These children eat good, healthy food. They have exercise every day in some shape or form. They are taught to take responsibility for their own room and toys. And every night, before going to bed they read the Bible, sing songs, and talk about living into their baptism.

If parental influence was important in the life of Christ — what about your own child or grandchild — or any child on whom you have influence? Our commitment to serve God obediently will have an affect on others. There is no such thing as a singular walk with the Lord, for we are all created for community. As a community, we all have an impact on the next generation. When it’s our turn to serve, may we serve well.

Prayer:

Lord, may I be an instrument that helps to guide the next generation toward you. Amen.
