The Lord Needs It

Scripture:

Luke 19:28 ¶ After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
Luke 19:29  ¶ When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
Luke 19:30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
Luke 19:31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
Luke 19:32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them.
Luke 19:33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
Luke 19:34 They said, “The Lord needs it.”

Observation:

Jesus was soon to enter Jerusalem and more prophesies were to be fulfilled, including the fact that he would ride on a donkey/colt.  This was a part of God's plan and now it was necessary to find the colt that had never been ridden.  For the prophecy to be fulfilled, the Lord would need to use the colt.  The disciples responded in obedience and went and untied the colt, because the Lord needed it.

Application:

What does the Lord need from us today?  The ordinary things of life can be used within his kingdom to bring about what he desires to accomplish but this takes faith and action on the part of the believer.  The disciples had faith -- they believed what Jesus told them.  They knew that when he said he needed the colt, he truly needed the colt.

When the Lord lets us know that there is something within our sphere of influence that he needs -- are we willing to respond immediately, not arguing with him, but obediently acting on what he needs?  These are the types of followers that the Lord needs today.

What he needs may not be something out there in the world, but it may be something with us.  When the Lord says to us, "I need that" -- what do we do?  What if he needs our time, our talent, or our resources?  If the Lord needs it, we must give it in obedience to him.  It is the obedience that is vital to our spiritual health.  Complete and total surrender to the Lord in all matters of our lives will bring us into greater intimacy with him.

The Lord needed the colt to help bring in a week that would change history.  It was just a little detail -- a colt that had never been ridden -- but an important detail in fulfilling prophecy.  There are little details that the Lord needs.  We must be attentive to his call and be obedient to his desires.  We never know what it is that the Lord may need.

Prayer:

Lord, what I have is yours.  Amen.
